Radiation Oncologist, Health Services Researcher

Fumiko Chino is a radiation oncologist and researcher whose work focuses on the financial toxicity of cancer care — the way costs, insurance design and out-of-pocket burden shape whether people get treatment and how they fare. She came to medicine after her husband died of a rare neuroendocrine cancer and the two of them navigated the financial side of his care.
A former graphic designer, she trained in radiation oncology at Duke and has published widely on access, affordability and disparities in cancer treatment. She is a prominent voice on these questions in the oncology community.
